Issues of Concern to NFA Members:
1-866-HAY-WEST requires farmers to register
The overwhelming response of farmers making their surplus hay available for shipment to livestock farmers in Western Canada continues, and as a formal organization develops to co-ordinate the effort, farmers are being urged to co-operate and work with that organization.
A spokesperson at the HAY WEST office in Smiths Falls says it is essential that every farmer with hay they want to send west make contact with the office and register the quantity and type of bale. The telephone number is 1-866-429-9378, but if that number is busy, there is a fax number that can be used – 613-947-5292.
All available rail cars are now filled, but if the numbers from any area of the province are sufficient, more rail cars could be requested.
It is also essential that the farmers register their available hay with the HAY WEST office in order to qualify for the required fumigation. Without the registration process being followed, the fumigation won't be paid for and the hay will not be accepted.
This information is being provided by the Ontario Federation of Agriculture as a service to the farmers of Ontario in an effort to support the work of volunteers who have taken on the project.
