Issues of Concern to NFA Members:

Rye Growers Funding for 2001 - Act now!
A Norfolk area rye grower has been struggling since 1992 to have rye recognized under governmental funding programs but to no avail. He approached the Norfolk Federation of Agriculture on May 2nd, 2001 asking that the NFA approach the OFA in order to represent rye growers in Ontario in achieving inclusion in the OGSP (Ontario Grain Stabilization Program) and future stabilization programs for grain growers in Ontario and Canada by both levels of government.

The Norfolk Federation of Agriculture put together a resolution to this very end and took it to the OFA. It passed unanimously.

In the meantime we felt it prudent to have other counties that had rye growers, other commodities, as well as our MP and our MPP support this cause. Overwhelming support came in by most interested. Toby Barrett forwarded the concern to Provincial Ag Minister, Brian Coburn and Mr. Coburn responded favourably;

“As you may know, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is currently working on a new grain stabilization program for the 2001 crop year and beyond as part of the “made in Ontario” safety net package. You will be pleased to know that we have directed AGRICORP to add rye harvested for grain to the list of crops to be included under any new program. AGRICORP will be providing additional information on this decision to Ontario farm organizations. In the interim, please feel free to inform Norfolk producers that they should be registering their harvested rye acreage for the 2001 crop year with AGRICORP.”
